Further Maths
Overview
A-level Further Mathematics is an advanced-level qualification designed for students who have a strong aptitude and interest in mathematics and wish to deepen their understanding and skills beyond the standard A-level Mathematics curriculum. This course is taken in addition to A-level Mathematics and is well-suited for students pursuing careers in mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science, and other related fields.
Course Content
Further mathematics has a strong pure aspect with two thirds of the course being pure mathematics. A further one third is split equally between statistics and mechanics. The topics covered are as follows:
Pure
Proof
Complex Numbers
Matrices
Further Algebra and Functions
Further Calculus
Further Vectors
Polar Coordinates
Hyperbolic Functions
Differential Equations
Numerical Methods
Mechanics
Dimensional Analysis
Momentum and Collisions
Work, Energy and Power
Circular Motion
Centres of Mass and Moments
Statistics
Discrete Random Variables
Poisson Distribution
Type 1 and Type 2 Errors
Continuous Random Variables
Chi2 test
Exponential Distribution
T-Distribution
Confidence Intervals
Assessment
Assessment methods include written examinations at the end of the course. We use the exam board AQA for further mathematics. The exams consist of two pure papers and then finally a combined statistics and mechanics paper.
Skills Developed
A-level Further Mathematics aims to develop advanced problem-solving skills, logical reasoning, and a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Students often engage in challenging problem-solving exercises that require them to apply mathematical principles to real-world situations.
Career and Further Study Opportunities
A-level Further Mathematics is highly regarded by universities and employers, especially in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. It provides a solid foundation for pursuing undergraduate studies in mathematics, engineering, physics, computer science, and related disciplines.
Prerequisites
A-level further maths is a challenging and difficult A-Level therefore the entry requirements are higher. At least a 7 in GCSE maths is essential with GCSE further maths as a recommended GCSE.
In summary, A-level Further Mathematics is a challenging and rewarding qualification that allows students to deepen their knowledge of mathematics and enhance their problem-solving skills. It provides a strong foundation for further academic pursuits and opens up a wide range of career opportunities in STEM fields.
