Djanogly City Academy Sixth Form

Cultural Capital - Overview

“The essential knowledge that pupils need to be educated citizens, introducing them to the best that has been thought and said and helping to engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement”.

(Department for Education, 2014, p.5)

The aims of our Cultural Capital programme are:

1. To provide the essential knowledge of citizenship, society, and of the local community.

2. To encourage and develop students’ understanding and use of creativity.

3. To facilitate effective and meaningful wellbeing support.

4. To offer students a diverse range of opportunities by engaging with a wide range of cultures, careers, and industries.

As a result of these aims, students leave our sixth form with an enriched sense of self-direction (use of creativity/career opportunities), self-reflection (knowledge of citizenship/wellbeing support), and self-transcendence (Society/Diversity). These are the components that make up self-awareness. Self-awareness being the strongest predictor of success.

Students are active agents in their society and community, understanding the role they play as an individual, member of various group identities, and as a citizen in general.

They will experience a richer sense of personal wellbeing, including being more daring, resilient, and connected. They will be impacted less severely by anxiety, stress, and loneliness. They will also become vicarious role models and leaders of positive wellbeing for others.

Students will have plentiful experiences to share and build on for their future prospects. The experiences will be varied and present a wide range of transferable skills, knowledge, and opportunities from which students can draw from.
